FAQ

About the Club

What is MoCo Slow Runners Club?

MoCo Slow Runners is a local running club built for slow runners, by slow runners. We’re based in Montgomery County, Maryland, and welcome all runners no matter their pace, including those using run/walk intervals.

Who is the club for?

The club is designed with slower runners in mind, but everyone is welcome! We recognize that “fast” and “slow” is relative, so anyone is welcome no matter their pace, as long as they’re comfortable with our community-focused, slower-paced environment.

Do I have to be a “good” runner?

Not at all! Whether you’re training for your first 5k , a half marathon, returning to running, or just looking for running friends, we’d love to have you.

Is this a beginner-friendly club?

Absolutely! Beginners are encouraged to join, even if you’ve never ran before and are looking to try.

Is there a membership fee?

No! The plan is to keep the run club free. Future opportunities to support the club may be available, but will always be optional.

Are you a social club?

While we do not host extra social events outside of our runs at this time, members are encouraged to arrive early and stay after each run to socialize with the club! Future social events may occur based on interest.

Can I volunteer or become a run leader?

Yes! We’re currently looking for a co-leader for our Saturday morning runs and other general run club representatives. Please contact Katherine at mocoslowrc@gmail.com if you’re interested.

Is there a minimum age?

Yes. While we support runners of all ages, for safety purposes all MoCo Slow Runner’s Club participants must be at least 18 years of age, unless otherwise discussed with the club founder.

Our Runs

How fast do you run?

We have a wide variety of paces amongst our club, ranging from around 11 min/mile all the way to 18+ min/mile. Even if you don’t see your pace here, you’re still welcome — our founder or another club representative will always run with the back of the pack to ensure no one is left behind.

Can I use run/walk intervals?

Yes! Run/walk intervals are encouraged and supported. Walk breaks are ALWAYS okay!

How long are the runs?

Unless otherwise noted, we run based on time to support a diverse range of paces. Our runs range from 30-60 minutes.

What if I’m slower than everyone else?

That’s exactly why this club exists. We strive to create a welcoming environment where slower runners feel comfortable and supported. Regardless of the pace, our founder or another club representative will always run with the back of the pack to ensure no one is left behind.

What if I’m faster than everyone else?

You’re absolutely welcome! We simply ask that everyone respect everyone’s pace and community-focused atmosphere. You’re welcome to slow down with us a little bit and enjoy an easier run!

Do I have to register?

We encourage everyone to RSVP through our Strava events whenever possible so we have an idea of attendance.

Are there restrooms available at your runs?

We try to ensure that there is at least a portable restroom available at all of our runs. If there is not a restroom available, or we are unsure, we will communicate that in advance.

Can I suggest routes or meetup locations?

Yes! As the club grows, we’d love member input on future routes and locations around Montgomery County.

Is there a bag drop or place I can leave my things?

No, unless otherwise noted. Runners are expected to store all personal belongings in their vehicle or an other safe location.

Is this a coached training group?

No. MoCo Slow Runners Club is a community running group, not a coaching or training program. Though we may work together to train for target races, we are not providing any training services at this time.

What happens if I’m late?

While we will try our best to accommodate everyone, if you are late it is likely that you will miss the start of the run. The route will be shared in advance and you are welcome to catch up with the group, or meet us at the meeting spot for after-run socializing!

Can I bring my stroller?

While the club is primarily designed for adults, infants and young children in jogging strollers are welcome when accompanied by a parent or guardian. Children who are old enough to walk or run independently should not attend club runs.

Are dogs allowed?

We love a dog who runs! However, to ensure the safety of all participants, dogs are allowed only on a case-by-case basis at this time. Please discuss with Katherine in advance by emailing mocoslowrc@gmail.com at least 1 week before the run. Note there may be other dogs at the event, so your dog must be socialized.

Preparing for Your First Run With Us

What should I bring?

We recommend bringing to every run:

  • Running shoes

  • Water or other hydration

  • Any fuel you may need

  • Weather-appropriate clothing

  • Sun protection

Any additional items needed for special events or runs will be announced with the run.

Can I come by myself?

Please do! Many members attend their first run solo. You’re also welcome to bring a friend if you’d like!

Where do you meet?

Meeting locations vary depending on the run. All relevant run information will be included in each event listing on Strava and here on Substack, and shared to our newsletter subscribers.

What happens if there is bad weather?

Safety comes first. Runs may be modified, postponed, or canceled due to severe weather, poor air quality, or other safety concerns. Updates will be shared through our communication channels.

Participation and Safety

Am I participating at my own risk?

Yes. Running, walking, and other outdoor activities involve inherent risks. Participants are responsible for their own health and safety and should only participate if they feel comfortable doing so.

What are the expectations for members?
  • Be respectful and welcoming to everyone. Hateful comments toward or harassment of fellow club members will not be tolerated.

  • Leave our run route cleaner than when we arrived.

  • Follow all park/trail regulations, traffic laws, and use good judgement.

  • Support your fellow runners, no matter their background or pace.

  • Help us create an inclusive environment where every pace and every person belongs.
